You start with nothing, driving a car that isn’t yours. Every job done well builds your name in the quartier; every rank is earned with what the city knows about you.

Every road, street name and building comes from OpenStreetMap, the free map made by the people who live there. Then we pulled the places that matter closer together: Abidjan’s Plateau is a two-minute taxi ride from Akwa, and Victoria Island is waiting at the end of the Pont de Sango.

A vehicle that wins everywhere is not a garage. Each one here decides three things: what you can load, how many passengers you take, and how much you stand out when you’re tailing someone.

Three people, three ways of doing the same job. Nobody is best at everything: Steve is fastest on foot, Mama Rose is kindest to the cargo, Ndongo goes everywhere unseen.

SangoCity keeps living when you stop. There is an hour, a weather, a radio, and people on the pavements.
The sun rises over the hills of Yaoundé and sets behind Bonanjo. At night the street lights come on and the streets change.
The downpour comes, the road gets wet, the tyres let go. The laterite turns dark red.

The streets, their names, the buildings and the landmarks come from OpenStreetMap. Distances are compressed so the neighbourhoods that matter sit close together, and building heights are estimated where the map doesn’t record them.
Douala, with Bonanjo, Akwa and New Bell; Lagos, with Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki; Abidjan, with the Plateau, Cocody and Treichville; and Yaoundé, with Bastos. Together they form one city, joined by bridges and a corniche.
